Option given back to the people to sustain their city’s public services 5/5/2009
In this unprecedented economic crisis, cities and counties are struggling financially just like state government. I introduced SB 5433 to provide them with more flexibility to maintain public safety, mental health, and other public services. Current law requires that new taxes for these purposes must be used for new or expanded services. That does not make sense when local jurisdictions are having to cut existing services due to declining revenue. The legislation, as I introduced it and as it passed the Senate, would remove that ‘non-supplant’ language and allow supplanting or support for existing services.

The home stretch: How the concurrence process works 4/19/2009
We are now a week away from the end of session, April 26.
Friday, April 17, at 5 p.m., was the last day to consider bills from the opposite body. This means that for the last few weeks the Senate has been debating House bills and the House has been debating Senate bills.

Sen. Regala’s thoughts on the Senate and House budget proposals 4/6/2009
Last Monday’s Senate Operating Budget offers specific cuts that are painful, but necessary to build a budget in face of an unprecedented deficit, now around a $9 billion gap. The Senate’s task is to balance spending against available revenues.

Sen. Regala Town Hall 3/16/2009
Last Saturday, over 120 people turned out for a standing room only town hall meeting at the Family Investment Center at Salishan in Tacoma. Every time I visit Salishan, I am proud of what an inviting housing development it is turning out to be! I was joined by my House counterparts, Rep. Jeannie Darneille and Rep. Dennis Flannigan. We were glad to have the chance to connect with constituents and speak with them about the economic crisis, our budget and ways they can get help now.

HomeSight Foreclosure workshop to residents of Tacoma and Pierce County, March 14 3/9/2009
Many in our own community have been living in fear of foreclosure. Former state legislator, Velma Veloria, has informed us of a great opportunity to get some help.
HomeSight has been working with the City of Tacoma, several organizations and government agencies to provide Foreclosure Intervention Workshops to residents of Tacoma and Pierce County.
There is one coming up soon:
DATE: Saturday, March 14
TIME: 10:00 a.m.–6p.m.
PLACE: Evergreen College Tacoma Campus 1210 6th Avenue
While this is the same day as my town hall meeting (10:00 a.m.–noon at Family Investment Center at Salishan), I hope those who need help in our community can attend and gain valuable insight.
Thought for the week: Truisms 3/9/2009
Here are some truisms to ponder this week:

Thank you for visiting my website. It is an honor and pleasure representing the people of the 27th legislative district, which includes parts of Tacoma, Fife and Ruston.
I am proud to say I am a life-long resident of Tacoma, including my college years which were spent at the University of Puget Sound where I earned a B.A. in Foreign Language/Education. My husband, Leo and I raised our three children, Alisa, Tim and Jonathan here, which I believe brings my experience of Tacoma full circle from a child, to young adult, to parent and now grandparent!
I invite you to browse my webpage which will be updated continually to provide you with the latest information on what is happening at the legislature.
During the legislative session, you will find press releases, photos, audio and video clips about subjects important to your family like human services, community safety and climate change.
Sincerely,
Debbie
