Sen. Hasegawa discusses the budget 4/30/2013
Sen. Hasegawa’s enewsletter update 4/27/2013 4/27/2013
Dear 11th District constituents,
With only a couple of days left in the legislative session, it appears inevitable that we'll be called back for a special session. When the Republicans launched their takeover of the Senate back in January, we warned them that it would create division and ensure a culture of dysfunction that would make it more difficult to reach consensus — and that’s exactly what happened. So while I’m disappointed that we were unable to complete the work we were sent here to do, I’m not surprised. We don’t know yet whether we’ll return for an immediate special session or be called back only after budget negotiators have had a chance to get nearer an agreement on the operating and capital budgets, but I’ll keep you posted.

Dear 11th District constituents,
We've passed the cut-off deadline for bills to be passed out of their chamber of origin. That means, with certain exceptions such as bills that are necessary to implement the budget, Senate bills that have not passed the Senate cannot be considered in the House, and vice versa. Those bills are considered dead. It’s important to remember, however, that these are really only dead for the remainder of this legislative session; they remain in their respective committees and can be pursued anew in the 2014 legislative session.

Hasegawa bill would allow days off for faith 3/18/2013
Public employees and students in public schools would be allowed to take up to two days off each year for reasons of faith or conscience under legislation heard today by the Senate Commerce & Labor Committee.
Senate Bill 5173, sponsored by Sen. Bob Hasegawa, D-Beacon Hill, would grant public employees the option of taking up to two unpaid holidays on days that suit their beliefs. Similarly, public school students could be excused from school for up to two days for similar reasons, provided they have their parents' approval. The school absences would not affect school district compliance with educational requirements or enrollment calculations.
