Governor signs Conway bill that will create jobs, housing in neighborhood surrounding PLU 3/30/2012

A bill which will create affordable housing for low- and middle-income families as well as stimulate economic development in neighborhoods nearby Pacific Lutheran University was signed by the governor on March 29.

Senate Bill 6277, sponsored by Sen. Steve Conway, D-South Tacoma, grants a property tax exemption to multifamily housing developments in unincorporated Pierce County near Pacific Lutheran University. This exemption hinges on these homes being sold or rented at low rates.

Sen. Conway’s bill will create jobs, housing in neighborhood surrounding PLU 3/14/2012

A bill which will create affordable housing for low- and middle-income families as well as stimulate economic development in neighborhoods nearby Pacific Lutheran University cleared the senate on Thursday just prior to the end of the regular legislative session.

Medicaid fraud reform bills pass Legislature on bipartisan basis 3/8/2012

An overhaul of Washington's Medicaid fraud recovery efforts to cut waste and recover taxpayer dollars was passed by the Legislature today with strong bipartisan support.  A bipartisan group of legislators applauded progress made Thursday. 

Experts from the National Conference of State Legislatures estimate the cost of Medicaid fraud accounts for 3 and 10 percent of total Medicaid expenditures. Washington spent $8.5 billion on Medicaid last year only to recover less than $20 million in fraud. At its most optimistic, the state's recovery rate tops out at less than 1 percent.

VIDEO: Sen. Conway, Senate honors LeMay - America's Car Museum 3/2/2012

On Friday afternoon, the Senate took a moment to honor the arrival in Tacoma of what could prove to be a destination of automobile enthusiasts from around the world.

LeMay - America's Car Museum, which will be located next to the Tacoma Dome, is scheduled to open to the public on June 2 of this year. The collection is comprised of cars from the private collection of the late Harold LeMay. The LeMay collection is one of the most respected collections of automobiles in the world and spans the history of the car through some 750 selected examples from Mr. LeMay's personal collection.

Conway named legislator of the year by the Certified Electrical Workers of Washington 2/15/2012

The Certified Electrical Workers of Washington, which represent 15,000 construction electricians in the state, has selected Sen. Steve Conway, D-South Tacoma, as its legislator of the year.

Conway earned the honor along with Reps. Mike Sells and Kristine Lytton.

Bill will provide consumers with protection from rising insurance rates 2/11/2012

Legislation sponsored by Sen. Steve Conway targets the billions of dollars in surpluses held by the state's three major health insurers in an effort to help put consumers ahead of profits and stabilize insurance premiums.

Senate Bill 5247 would cap insurance company reserves to provide for three months worth of claims. If a three-month cap is put in place, estimates are that it could save Washington consumers up to $1 billion.

Sen. Conway targets street gangs, human trafficking 2/10/2012

A bill which will help put a stop to the sexual exploitation of minors as it relates to criminal street gang activity received unanimous support in the senate this week.

Senate Bill 6256, sponsored by Sen. Steve Conway, D-South Tacoma, adds the promotion of commercial sex abuse of a minor to the list of gang-related offenses.

Sen. Conway bill takes aim at Medicaid fraud 2/10/2012

Each year the state spends approximately $8.5 billion on Medicaid. Of that number, an estimated 3-10 percent is spent on fraudulent claims.

A bill sponsored by Sen. Steve Conway is aimed at giving whistleblowers a tool in the fight against Medicaid fraud.
