UW North site announced, Shin reminds public to
remember ‘it’s about the students’
OLYMPIA – The Legislature this year appropriated funds to
identify where best to locate a University of Washington branch
campus in the Snohomish-Island-Skagit County Region. The
architectural firm of NBBJ was retained by the state Office of
Financial Management to conduct the study. Its report, delivered
today to members of the Legislature and Gov. Gregoire, announced
Pacific Station in Everett as the preferred home to a new University
of Washington campus — UW North.

Washington state first in the nation to add Korean
American Day in state law
OLYMPIA – With the stroke of a pen, Washington became the
first state in the nation to recognize Korean Americans in
an honorary state holiday. State Sen. Paull Shin, D-Edmonds
stood proudly alongside Gov. Chris Gregoire as
Senate Bill
5166, designating Jan. 13 as Korean American Day, was signed
into law yesterday.

OLYMPIA – Sen. Paull Shin, D-Edmonds, is sponsoring
a resolution that pays tribute to Washington service members who
have lost their lives in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation
Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The resolution will be read
Thursday, April 12, at 11:30 am, on the Senate floor.

OLYMPIA – Although his legislative newsletters and
stationery are printed on recycled paper, Sen. Paull Shin,
D-Edmonds, wants to “go green” even more. To reduce household
waste, Shin is offering his constituents an e-newsletter and
periodic legislative updates.

Proposed Senate budget would give district $16
million for construction projects
OLYMPIA – Today, the Senate’s fiscal committee chair and
vice chairs, Senate Ways & Means Committee chair Sen. Margarita
Prentice (D-Renton), and vice-chairs Sens. Craig Pridemore
(D-Vancouver) and Karen Fraser (D-Thurston County)
unveiled the proposed 2007–09 budgets, which provide money for a
phase-in of all-day kindergarten, allot resources for math and
science programs, and create a Rainy Day Fund.

State-backed student loan programs would
benefit students and Washington
OLYMPIA – After Sallie Mae acquired the Washington Student
Loan Finance Association (WSLFA) in 2004, it left students with one
fewer option to obtain a tax-exempt educational loan. To fill the
void, the Washington Higher Education Facilities Authority (WHEFA),
which issues bonds for college and university buildings, was tapped

Bill would designate Jan 13 as newest holiday
in Washington
OLYMPIA – Asian Americans are the 2nd fastest growing
minority group in Washington. Sen. Paull Shin, D-Edmonds, the
first and only Korean-American legislator in the state’s history,
introduced a bill that would celebrate the accomplishments of
Washington’s Korean-Americans by designating Jan 13 as a non-legal
holiday. Today, it unanimously passed the Senate.

Senate boasts largest number of Asian American
members in Washington’s history
OLYMPIA – Asian Americans, the second largest ethnic group
in Washington, now hold more Senate seats than at any other time in
state history. Sen. Paull Shin, D-Edmonds, Sen. Chris Marr,
D-Spokane and Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, reflect
the growing Asian presence in the Senate. Shin is a Korean-American;
Marr and Hobbs are both Japanese-Americans.

Shin bill would identify reasons for lack of
qualified graduates in high tech fields
OLYMPIA – Although our state has some of the most highly
educated citizens, only 14 percent of Washington’s students graduate
with degrees in high demand fields. Looking to lessen the dependence
on imported high tech workers, Sen. Paull Shin, D-Edmonds,
sponsor of Senate Bill 5731, said that his bill would
increase the capacity of colleges and universities to graduate more
students with degrees in math- and science-related fields.

Asian Pacific Americans mobilize for
Legislative Day 2007
OLYMPIA – Washington’s Asian Pacific American (APA)
population is diverse; members either hail or have ancestors
who are from East or South Asia, Southeast Asia or the
Pacific Islands. Sen. Paull Shin, D-Edmonds, said
that despite the diverse mix of cultures and languages
within the APA’s community, Legislative Day is an
opportunity to unite under common themes such as elder care,
immigration reform and multicultural development.

Central Washington University asks Legislature
for permanent increases in tuition waiver authority
OLYMPIA – Concerned about the number of Central Washington
University (CWU) students that can’t afford rising college tuition
costs, Sen. Paull Shin, D-Edmonds, is sponsoring Senate
Bill 5466 that would permanently increase CWU’s state-funded
tuition waiver authority from 8 percent to 11 percent.

OLYMPIA – Pages provide invaluable services to legislators
and staff by relaying documents across the Capitol Campus,
responding to requests from senators at work in the Senate chamber
and presenting the flag during floor sessions. In exchange, students
receive a valuable, living civics lesson by seeing state government
