Asian Pacific Americans mobilize for
Legislative Day 2007
OLYMPIA – Washington’s Asian Pacific American (APA)
population is diverse; members either hail or have ancestors
who are from East or South Asia, Southeast Asia or the
Pacific Islands. Sen. Paull Shin, D-Edmonds, said
that despite the diverse mix of cultures and languages
within the APA’s community, Legislative Day is an
opportunity to unite under common themes such as elder care,
immigration reform and multicultural development.
“Legislative Day will take on a whole new meaning this
year, given an increase in Asian presence in the state
Senate,” said Shin, now one of three Asian state senators.
“I hope people will come to Olympia and take this
opportunity to meet with our new senators and hear from our
governor.”
The 2007 Asian Pacific American Legislative Day is
sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition (APIC) of
King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane counties, and of Central
and Southwest Washington. Since 1997, APIC has advocated for
culturally sensitive and language appropriate health-care
and human services.
APIC’s legislative issues include:
- basic health-care services;
- health care; and
- long-term care.
The event will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 13, in
the Legislative Building on the Capitol Campus. For more
