Sen. Hobbs: Invest in opportunity for
our children
OLYMPIA – Smart investing means directing your
limited resources where they pay the greatest dividends. And
there is simply no investment smarter than education.
The Legislature today approved a measure that would phase
in funding for voluntary all-day kindergarten by providing
support for students in schools with the highest poverty
levels. It would also create three demonstration or pilot
projects: comprehensive K through 3 foundations programs; an
English as a Second Language field study and project; and
career pathways programs in high demand fields.
“Investing in children early will pay dividends
throughout their life,” said Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake
Stevens. “It’s a smart investment and it’s the right
investment.”
Hobbs said the state constitution makes it clear: “It is
the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for
the education of all children residing within its borders.”
Senate Bill 5841, sponsored by Hobbs, supports the
vision of the Washington Learns task force by creating an
education system that gives all students opportunity by
redefining basic education to focus on results, and more
accurately reflect the skills and knowledge students need to
compete in today’s job market.
“As a father of three boys, I know kids are like
sponges,” Hobbs said. “Let’s make sure they soak up the
skills they’ll need throughout their lives. If we truly
believe that education is our paramount duty, then this
investment is mandatory.”
SB 5841 now goes to Gov. Gregoire for her signature.
